What is a "top-of-footer" drain system and is it the same as drain tile?

No. Top-of-footer (or baseboard channel) systems sit at slab elevation and catch water after it has already breached the cove joint. They don't relieve hydrostatic pressure because they don't create a drawdown curve below the slab. Some large franchise waterproofers sell these as drain tile, but they're functionally a gutter inside your basement. A true interior drain tile sits below the slab at footing depth and creates the pressure relief that actually stops the leak. We install the latter.

Three things usually drive the gap. First, the scope: a $8K quote may be top-of-footer channel only (not real drain tile), or partial perimeter, or no backup pump. A $25K quote may include full perimeter below-slab drain tile, vapor barrier wall membrane, sump pit rebuild, primary pump, and battery backup. Second, the pump and backup: a box-store pump with no backup is $200 in materials; a Zoeller M53 with an Aquanot 508 and an AGM battery is several thousand installed. Third, overhead: national franchises carry massive marketing budgets that get priced into every job. No. The quote you sign is the price you pay, assuming the scope doesn't change. If that happens, we stop, show you what we found, and quote the additional scope before doing it. Never a surprise on the final invoice.

The Zoeller M53 1/3 HP we install as the default is professional-grade equipment (cast iron, PSC motor, vortex impeller, thermal overload protection); the M98 1/2 HP we use for heavier flow is the same engineering with more capacity. Upgrading to a duplex (two primary pumps alternating cycles) is a legitimate option for finished basements with high-value contents, adds $1,500–$2,500. WiFi water-level alarms, ozone-resistant components, and other 'commercial-grade' upgrades exist but rarely justify the cost on owner-occupied residential. We'll talk through what makes sense for your specific situation at the inspection.
